A U.S. patent for TECH5’s groundbreaking digital ID verification system has been published.  The patent covers the innovative methods for issuance, storage, and real-time verification of digital identity credentials, as well as selective disclosure of both biometric and biographic data of the credential holder.

This pioneering technology introduces a transformative approach to identity verification by integrating live biometric authentication with a decentralized, verifiable credential stored and presented as a 2D machine-readable code or a digital file (Verifiable Credential – “VC”). The patented system enables secure real-time identity verification without dependence on centralized databases or continuous internet connectivity – unlocking trusted interactions in both online and offline environments.

Credentials can be stored in standard formats such as W3C VCs, and their decentralized use supports the development of digital identity infrastructure aligned with Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) principles.

“We continue to innovate in the field of decentralized identity because we believe in building inclusive infrastructure that empowers every individual to participate in the digital ecosystem in a secure and private manner. There is still work to be done to create truly trustworthy digital IDs that are accessible to all. The method and system described in this patent bring us one step closer to that goal. This technology serves as a core building block for decentralized Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), where digital identity becomes the foundation of trust.”– Rahul Parthe, Co-founder, Chairman, and CTO at TECH5.

This patent further reinforces TECH5’s visionary commitment to supporting countries in accelerating their digital transformation through the development of sovereign DPI. By enabling decentralized and offline operations, the technology ensures universal inclusion, while delivering infinite scalability, robust security, and privacy-preserving interactions. Its integration into DPI offerings strengthens financial inclusion by expanding access to banking, credit services, and secure digital payment ecosystems.

Key features of the patented technology include:

  • Live biometric verification: it utilizes biometric data (e.g., facial image, fingerprint, iris, palm, voice etc.) for identity binding and verification by generating and storing biometric templates or a unique, stable “bio-hash” that can be used in identity verification.
  • 2D machine-readable code-based credentials: identity information is encrypted or signed and stored in a machine-readable 2D code that can be printed on physical IDs or stored digitally.
  • Decentralized architecture: it operates in both online and offline environments, removing dependency on centralized systems and enabling usage in remote or low-connectivity regions.
  • Selective data disclosure: the technology enables granular control by allowing users to share only specific pieces of information (e.g., age, name) with verifiers through shard-based decryption keys (where the decryption key is split into multiple parts (shards) and distributed among different entities or locations).
  • Blockchain integration: the technology ensures tamper resistance and auditability by optionally storing biometric templates and key shards on a permissioned blockchain.

Today, TECH5 has its digital ID system based on this technology tested and adopted by a number of governments for its National ID projects. This system is available for TECH5’s certified partners worldwide.

The company is now actively working on implementing its solution for decentralized DPI in various countries in Africa and Latin America. This solution includes TECH5’s digital ID system and relies on the approaches described in this patent.

TECH5, an innovator in the field of biometrics and digital identity management, launches its Biometric Derived Keys (BDK) technology called T5-AirKey. T5-AirKey is an innovative BDK technology that uses biometrics to derive keys that can be used to perform cryptographic operations like digital signing and encryption.

This technology provides significant advantages by addressing the vulnerabilities inherent in the conventional and most widely used approach of storing and using static biometric templates for matching, whether on devices or in databases. The BDK functionality is achieved by generating a unique, random irreversible ephemeral key from a fresh biometric capture of face, fingerprints, or any other biometric modality. This real-time key is based on the user’s biometrics, yet revocable, enables encryption and signing of sensitive data, eradicates the need for biometric template databases (honey pots), and eliminates man-in-the-middle attacks and diverse security vulnerabilities. It can not only be used to securely authenticate the user but can be also used for encrypting sensitive data that can only be unlocked by the owner with their biometrics. It can also replace the need for seed phrases required by many digital wallets – one of the biggest reasons for people to lose crypto assets. It will also enable better biometric approaches in IAM systems and passkey-like solutions.

T5-AirKey is designed to address the most pressing challenges of legacy biometric systems, associated with using static biometric templates for matching, either stored in databases, device, or alternatively stored and presented in traditional 2D barcodes like QR codes. This technology mitigates risks such as template exposure for replay attacks, reverse engineering templates to generate face images or identifying traits like gender and ethnicity and overriding match results produced by the probabilistic matcher.

Additionally, the technology eliminates the need for additional encryption during storage and transmission, or complex distributed template storage and matching computation systems. It can be easily combined with other cryptographic technologies to achieve post-quantum cryptography-proof solutions. T5-AirKey can be used in verifiable credentials (W3C VC) stored in digital wallets or embedded in codes, not only enabling encryption but also facilitating selective disclosure by encrypting different claims signed using different modalities of the same person.

ISO 30136 guidelines address biometric template protection, requiring revocability, non-reversibility, non-linkability, and protected matching. However, most existing solutions fail to fully mitigate risks associated with stored templates. “TECH5’s Biometric Template Protection technology meets ISO 30136 compliance by encrypting raw templates. T5-AirKey goes a step further by ensuring that no templates are ever stored, eliminating static data vulnerabilities.” – Comments Rahul Parthe, TECH5’s Co-founder, Chairman and CTO.
With T5-AirKey, TECH5 completes its technology offering for identity management systems, delivering a comprehensive response to modern identity threats while specifically tackling legacy challenges that continue to affect many biometric systems.

“We are proud to launch this groundbreaking suite of technologies that revolutionizes the use of biometrics in cryptographic operations, identity verification, and secure data sharing, offering unparalleled privacy, flexibility, and fraud protection. We look forward to seeing companies implement it and achieve a new level of security in identity management. We are also looking forward to the impact it will have on Digital ID and Digital Public Infrastructure projects globally.” – Says Mr. Parthe.

TECH5’s biometric and digital ID technologies are used by the Mauritanian Ministry of Digital Transition, Innovation and Public Sector Modernisation (MTNIMA) for its digital ID pilot project, with the aim of replacing passwords with biometrics for access to eGovernment services.

TECH5 won this digital ID pilot project in partnership with local integrator SmartMS through a tender published by MTNIMA and UNDP (United Nations Development Program) in June 2022. The companies provided a jointly developed software solution for digital onboarding and verification of citizens. This consists of identity verification (identity proofing) with auto-ident process[1]based on the NIST (National Institute for Standards in Technology) identity proofing and biometric verification, based on OpenID Connect flows, allowing for passwordless login into the Mauritanian eGovernment portal.

The solution includes the back-end system and the Identity Provider (IdP) developed by SmartMS, as well as TECH5’s technology platforms T5-OmniMatch Face BioSDK for facial biometric 1:1 matching, T5-AirSnap Face technology for facial biometrics capture using the camera of a mobile phone, T5-LDS facial liveness detection software, and T5-IDencode platform for the issuance of a digital ID stored in an encrypted 2D machine readable identity container – T5-Cryptograph – containing biometric and biographical data of the citizen that is used to perform decentralized biometric authentication as part of consent framework before sharing of personal information.

TECH5 has also provided MTNIMA with the mobile applications for the iOS and Android operating systems, allowing for biometric data capture and verification using a mobile phone. The apps have built-in Optical Character Recognition (OCR)[2] and Near-field Communication (NFC)[3] technologies for document data reading and verification during digital onboarding.

Additionally, TECH5 shared its knowledge and contributed the source code of the customised solution developed for this pilot project, to MOSIP (Modular Open Source Identity Platform). “Our company is confidently investing in digital ID projects across the globe. We firmly believe that by promoting collaboration between governments, open-source solution providers, and creators of value-add technology, we can shape a more inclusive future for everyone”- says Co-founder, Chairman, and CTO of TECH5 Rahul Parthe. “The successful implementation of the solution is a testament to the exceptional combination of biometric and Digital ID technologies. Thanks to the cutting-edge advancements in this field, the citizens of Mauritania can now enjoy easy, fast, and secure access to eGov services.”

The pilot was successfully presented to MTMINA ministry’s employees on March 22nd, 2023, with more than 70 people testing the application on the first day of trials. During the digital onboarding, citizens are enrolled with their Mauritanian Passport or an ID card featuring contactless capability (issued after June 2022), using the mobile application. The document holder’s photo is biometrically verified by the app against the holder’s face and sent to the back-end system for digital ID creation. Once a digital ID in the form of a T5-Cryptograph is created, it is sent back to the holder and stored in their phone. For biometric verification, enabling access to the Mauritanian eGovernment portal, the user will be verified by face against their digital ID by taking a selfie when requested by the portal during login.

Leveraging the potential of digital technology and innovation for development is a key priority in Mauritania’s national development strategy[4].

“Through this pilot, we have successfully demonstrated secure and trusted identity proofing of test users as well as user authentication for e-government application.” – Commented Yehdhih Anna, Project Manager at SmartMS.

“We are proud to be part of this project contributing to the technological transformation of the country. Mauritania looks to be on track to become one of the first countries to adopt fully digital national ID biometrically linked to its holder.” –  Says Ameya Bhagwat, Chief Revenue Officer at TECH5.

The pilot project continued until October 1st, 2023, and the Mauritanian government have now released an app for its citizens called Houwiyeti (هويتي ), concretising the first steps of the digital Identity program of the Mauritanian government. This app is used to have access to various services based on biometric identification.

TECH5, an innovator in the field of biometrics and digital identity management, is announcing the availability of its new biometric template protection technology, fully compliant with the ISO 30136 standard. The technology will be available in TECH5’s multi-modal biometric matching system, T5-OmniMatch ABIS, for both 1:1 and 1:Nmodes, across all three biometric modalities – face, fingerprint and iris.

In biometric recognition systems, a template/feature is extracted from a biometric input (such as face, finger) and is matched with another template for identification and verification purposes. These templates, in most cases, contain privacy-sensitive information about the subject’s identity. With the growing adoption of biometrics across many domains and increasing concerns about privacy and security, it is imperative to ensure that biometric templates don’t reveal any personal identifiable information (PII) even if they are compromised. Hence, data protection regulations, such as the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), consider biometric templates as sensitive data that must (legally) be protected. Several digital infrastructure initiatives that rely on digital identities have highlighted biometrics as being crucial for ensuring secure and user-friendly interactions between users and service providers. However, there is a cautious approach to adopting biometrics due to privacy and security concerns. Europe’s digital identity framework eIDAS is no exception. TECH5’s biometric template protection aims to alleviate these concerns and build trust in the technology among users.

Compliant to ISO 30136, TECH5’s proprietary biometric template protection scheme satisfies the four principal requirements:

    1. Cancelability: an essential requirement, it is the capability to cancel or revoke compromised templates and issue new ones, similar to password resets. TECH5’s cutting-edge biometric template protection technology directly addresses this crucial need by providing the ability to cancel or revoke a protected biometric template and replace it with another protected template.
    2. Unlinkability: an often-overlooked aspect in biometrics, it guarantees that two protected templates of the same individual across different applications will not be related or linked. Users can establish distinct biometric protected templates per account, profile, or use case.
    3. Irreversibility: Engineered with irreversibility in mind, the technology makes it computationally extremely difficult or even impossible to recover the unprotected biometric template from a protected template.
    4. Accuracy: The biometric template protection technology is constructed on top of TECH5’s top-tier biometric algorithms and does not compromise the high matching accuracy, empowering customers to implement highly secure, flexible, and privacy-preserving large-scale biometric systems with minimal increase in hardware requirements.

This advanced multi-layered technology seamlessly fuses AI (Artificial Intelligence), Machine Learning and traditional methods to ensure robust template protection for both the entire database and individual users. This enables customers to implement centralized or decentralized authentication systems with equal protection. In the event of a database breach, new biometric-protected templates can be immediately deployed for the entire population, while in the case of an individual’s compromised biometric templates, the system can issue new protected templates based on the user’s PIN or passphrase input.

“Continuous innovation to achieve inclusion without compromising the security and privacy of the users is one of the founding principles at TECH5. Our biometric template protection technology prioritizes privacy while maintaining high accuracy to ensure both inclusion and security. This achievement is made possible through the exceptional collaboration of research scientists with expertise in biometrics and machine learning. As pioneers, we are among the foremost international providers of multimodal biometrics, offering this technology as an integral feature of flagship enterprise solutions like the ABIS (Automated Biometric Identification System), tailor-made for large-scale deployments.” – Comments Rahul Parthe, Co-Founder, Chairman and CTO at TECH5.

Auctorizium, a Singapore-based technology company focused on ePassport PKI and ePassport validation, in partnership with TECH5, a Swiss-based innovator in the field of biometrics and digital identity management, provided a turnkey solution for one of the world’s first digital travel credential pilot projects – Finland’s DTC (Digital Travel Credential) initiative. This allows travellers to fly between Helsinki and a number of locations around the world using a DTC Type 1 as specified by the International Civil Aviation Organization. This pilot is funded by the European Commission and results of the pilot will inform the EU Regulations on the use of DTC at EU borders.

Auctorizium is responsible for the development, deployment, and support of all technology components of the pilot system. This includes the identity wallet (Android and iOS), the registration system, the transmission protocol, pre-clearance checks, the Inspection System to handle the DTC, and assisting in the generation of reports for the DTC pilot.

For the facial biometric matching at the Inspection System, the project uses TECH5’s T5-OmniMatch SDK, integrated with Auctorizium’s solution. First, a passenger is verified 1:1 against a photo in their passport when applying for a DTC from their phone, and later verified 1:1 and “1: few” on boarding the flight. The SDK is powered by TECH5’s AI-based (Artificial Intelligence) algorithms, fully developed in-house and ranked among the fastest and most accurate in the world by various international benchmarks.

Finland’s Digital Travel Credential (DTC) represents a digital version of the passport and is as reliable as the physical document. DTC allows passengers on Finnair flights traveling to destinations outside the Schengen Area to pass through border control faster and easier than before without compromising security. Launched on August 28, 2023, in January 2024 the project was extended, and the DTC now can be used on the way to and from 22 Finnair destinations. The first digital verification of a passenger using the DTC took place on September 1, 2023, for the flight from Helsinki to London. The pilot project will continue at Helsinki-Vantaa airport until the end of March 2024.

The goal of this project is to facilitate travel and improve passenger safety through the latest technology, allowing travellers to complete immigration requirements before their flights, utilizing Digital Travel Credentials (DTC). This technology prioritizes secure data sharing and passenger privacy while enhancing verification and security.

This initiative is a collaborative effort between Finnair, the Finnish police, and Finavia, the airport operator. This initiative aligns with a broader European Union (EU) plan to test digital passports in a bid to enhance travel technology and security measures.

“The Finland pilot is the first of its kind to use the specifications of the Digital Travel Credential issued by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). As the editor of the specifications in ISO SC17/WG3, I am very pleased that the European Commission has taken the lead on trying out the new specifications at EU border. While we possess the know how to implement such a solution, biometrics is not our core capability and I am happy with the partnership with Tech5, the quality of their product and also their excellent support capabilities. This enabled us to focus on our own core competencies in delivering the project while TECH5 took care of the biometrics.” comments – R Rajeshkumar, Chief Executive at Auctorizium.

“We are thrilled to be a part of a groundbreaking project with our partner Auctorizium, where Digital Travel Credentials (DTC) are being implemented in real border control for the first time ever. Witnessing the use of digital credentials in the real world is an exciting step towards establishing a broader infrastructure for digital identification. This initiative will enhance security, improve user experience, and pave the way for innovations in the travel industry.” – says Rahul Parthe, Co-founder, Chairman, and CTO of TECH5.

Till date, more than two hundred passengers flying Finnair have passed through border control smoothly using the DTC. An average check takes less than 8 seconds.

Pangea, a trusted global supplier of digital transformation solutions for government and enterprise organizations, together with TECH5, an innovator in the field of biometrics and identity management, provided a multi-modal biometric matching solution (ABIS) to the Electoral Commission of Jamaica, as well as support for the establishment and maintenance of a biometric voter registry. This project was awarded to Pangea after winning a public tender from the Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ) for the replacement of Automated Biometric Identification Solution (ABIS) and related applications (bidding document reference number ECJ/ABIS:2021).

Pangea successfully integrated a centralized biometric voter registration system, including installation, configuration, and commissioning of TECH5’s multimodal automated biometric matching system T5-OmniMatch ABIS, to de-duplicate, identify and verify voters with fingerprint and face biometrics. The company also integrated the supplied technologies with the existing systems like the Elector Registration System (ERS).

T5-OmniMatch ABIS (Automated Biometric Identification System) platform, installed in this project, was fully compliant with all requirements, such as having a minimum capacity to manage 3 million elector records, supporting ANSI/NIST-ITL 1-2011 for communication and export/import data, using the ANSI/NIST ITL 1-2011 standard for all communications, having fingerprint compression algorithm certified by the FBI, and other requirements listed in the bidding document.

Pangea’s platform included biometric de-duplication of migrated and enrolled biometrics, to ensure that the same person does not exist in the database under a different name and allows the identification and verification of voters by face and fingerprints against the entire database within seconds. TECH5’s biometric technologies integrated into the platform are among the fastest and the most accurate in the world, according to international benchmarks.

The project involved migration from the existing 10-years-old Cogent Automated Fingerprint Processing System (Thales CABIS) platform to the modern multi-modal TECH5’s matching platform. Pangea and TECH5’s team delivered a solution to perform quality checks on existing images of fingerprints and faces that were then inserted into the new T5-OmniMatch ABIS to perform deduplication checks. The new platform also features accepting fingerprint images captured using a CardScan software where inked (paper-based) fingerprints were converted into digital format to be processed by the platform.

All hardware and software components for the Electoral Commission of Jamaica for this project, were delivered by Pangea and TECH5, including kits for biometric registration systems across the country, supporting a voter register of four million people, with maintenance and continuous support. Pangea has sub-contracted a Jamaica-based IT company to provide after-sale maintenance and support services for a period of five years.

“We are proud of the successful completion of this important ABIS project, with full satisfaction of our customer, among other Pangea’s civil and criminal biometric projects implemented worldwide. This achievement is an important milestone in Pangea’s overall efforts in this region.” – comments Pangea’s Chief Business Officer, Uzy Rozenthal.

“We are delighted to announce another successful voter registry project, following the implementations in Oman and other countries, and implemented with our trusted partner Pangea. TECH5 is bringing a modern approach to the biometric solutions deployed for elections and we are proud to know that TECH5’s technologies help to eliminate the risk of voter fraud and ensure election security and will be scaling this successful use case in other countries this year.” – says Ameya Bhagwat, TECH5’s SVP Global Sales and Business Development.
